Das Glockenspiel

Do you know what a Glockenspiel is ?

One classical piece where such an instrument is used is Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte. (this part, like many others, calls for a keyboard glockenspiel.

Well, a Glockenspiel ( das Glockenspiel in German) is a a musical instrument in the percussion family and it sounds like “Christmas”. The name itself “glockenspiel” comes from German and it means “bell play”, referring to the sound made of small bells. Other names in English for it would be carillon or chime.

Who invented the instrument ? The Germans did, of course :)

The original glockenspiel, invented in Germany in the Middle Ages, had real bells, but in the 1700s these bells were replaced with the much more practical metal bars.

Glockenspiels are still popular nowadays and appear in almost all genres of music ranging from hip hop to jazz !

One classical piece where such an instrument is used is Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte.
